Bognor Holiday Guide
The online guide to Bognor Regis

The friendly seaside town of Bognor Regis lies on the south coast, just a few miles from Chichester.

The resort’s history can be traced back over a thousand years, and even today a £100million development plan is under way to breathe new life into the town with a cinema, bowling alley, additional shops, a health centre, a library and much more besides.

Regeneration specialists St Modwen are handling the development package, which is due for completion in 2013.

It will add to the existing charm of Bognor Regis, which already offers a safe and pleasant town centre in which most of the streets are pedestrianised, enabling the pedestrian to window-shop with ease.

In its early days the town was simply called Bognor – and of course it’s often shortened to its original one-word title even today. It is recorded in history as far back as 680AD, under the name Bucgan Ora.

Originally a fishing village, Bognor started to develop its tourist appeal after the placing of its founding stone as a resort in 1787.

Then in 1929, after King George V stayed in the town after recovering from an illness, the Bognor council applied for permission to add the Regis title after the town’s name – and it was granted. Regis is Latin, meaning ‘of the King’.

Its long promenade complemented by pubs, continental-style bars, rides and amusements make the seafront alone a perfect destination for all ages.

The beach at Bognor Regis is award winning, having secured the Blue Flag for cleanliness on several occasions, and there’s plenty on offer for the thrillseeker, like jet-skiing, windsurfing and bodyboarding. The town’s two existing leisure centres offer pursuits such as squash, badminton and tennis.

And a miniature railway covering a three-quarter-mile route in Hotham Park further adds to the town’s seaside charm.
